About this collection

The Lewis Ansbacher Collection contains maps and engravings donated to the Jacksonville Public Library through the generosity of the Lewis and Sybil Ansbacher Family Foundation; Sybil Ansbacher, wife of the late Mr. Lewis Ansbacher; and his brother, Jordan Ansbacher.

The map collection includes antiquarian maps of Florida and Florida cities, North and South America, and the World. It includes historical views and plates focusing on northern Florida.

The engravings collection includes engravings published in 1591 by Flemish engraver and publisher Theodor De Bry of the images created by Jacques Le Moyne. The images depict native life in the New World, including the Timucua, and constitute the earliest known visual representations of Florida and its indigenous people.
